This is romance: Brief Encounter (1945)

Between now and Valentine's Day, I thought it might be a nice warm-up in this bleak winter to post some romantic moments from favorite films for those who enjoy a good love story. A moment or two to savor how people connect--however tenuously--might be just the mini-vacation we crave just now.

I'll start with one of the best--and naturally, one of the most poignant. Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard directed by David Lean in a slight but potent Noel Coward story -- Brief Encounter (1945). Celia Johnson's sensitive face registers everything that needs to be said; though the tenderness in Trevor Howard's eloquent hand on Celia's shoulder resonates with me.

I'm not certain - as I sit here wracked with sobs - that this is the exact mini-vacation I needed.

However, thank you for reminding me that this is a film I need to share with my daughter.

Oh, Patricia--I am sorry it had that effect. I was afraid to tell anyone I liked this movie for years after a very bright friend laughed at it, dismissing all these people and their trivial lives. Since then, I've learned that is the essence of this movie, which can teach us to notice those people we blithely ignore everyday. Everyone is always going through something and their story ought to be told too.

I do hope that your daughter finds something to enjoy in Brief Encounter.
