Whispering Smith (1948): Alan Ladd Hits the Trail

The first time that I saw Whispering Smith (1948), I was living near the Canadian border, and we received several tv stations from Quebec, which were broadcast in French. Despite this challenge to my then high school French, I was smitten with this odd little Western, (called Smith Le Taciturne on the CBC), from the opening sequence, which shows Ladd making his way on horseback through a bucolic rural landscape that's said to be Wyoming, (though probably some location nearer to the Paramount Ranch, where most of the movie was shot). In a sense, my imperfect French comprehension made me look at Whispering Smith in its purest visual sense the first time.
